3D Platform Game in the Oddworld Series

Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee is a platform game, which serves as the sequel to the two previous games in the Oddworld series, Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exodus. It marks something of a departure from the style of its predecessors, however, switching from a 2D system to a 3D one. In addition, the game now primarily focuses on the character of Munch; a 'Gabbit' with a frog-like appearance.

Familiar Features

Despite the cosmetic changes, there is a lot here for fans of the previous two games to enjoy. The core gameplay still largely revolves around using special powers to solve puzzles and progress, it remains set in the same 'Oddworld' setting and players are even still able to control Abe, who can be switched in and out for Munch, with both characters having their own abilities and limitations.

Lighter Tone

The game does adopt a slightly lighter tone than earlier games in the series, while the shift to a 3D game world has had the unfortunate side effect of making the world itself smaller. Nevertheless, Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee is a solid platform game in its own right, and has a lot to offer players who have played Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exodus prior to starting this new adventure.

PROS

  • A 3D version of Oddworld
  • Compelling characters storyline
  • Fun, puzzle-based gameplay
  • Multiple different endings

CONS

  • Puzzles can become repetitive
  • Smaller than its predecessors
  • Dark themes have been toned down
  • Jumping controls are erratic
